Seven Up

ManUtd 7 - A.S. Roma 1
The final scoreline at Old Trafford said it all. The romans were hopelessly thrashed in a virtuoso display of attacking football by Manchester United. Nobody could have dreamt of that kind of a scoreline before the match especially considering that Man Utd were trailing from the first leg and were w/o Scholesy. But after Carrick had chipped a fantastic shot over Doni, United just steamrolled over Roma. Many teams (chelski?) would have tried to defend that 1-0 lead that would have been enough to carry Manu to the semi-finals. But not Manu. The scoreline is a testimony to the beautiful, free-flowing attacking football that the Red Devils have been playing all season long.
Sir Alex Ferguson had earlier said that after being defeated in last two games his team would bounce back . And did they do well? Ronaldo was brilliant as expected . Is Carrick taking some shooting lessons from the Ginger Prince ? Two sublime strikes by the man whose is proving that his importance to the team is much more than the 18.6 million pounds that Utd shelled out for him. Giggs again stepped up to the occasion and provided 4 assists. But the major surprise performance of the night to me was that of Darren Fletcher. Filling in the void left by Scholes's suspension Fletcher did more than what would have been asked of him. He made several important tackles and was a livewire on the pitch. He was all over the Roma midfield and dominated DeRossi & Totti :O. If he can play at such a level regularly then Utd don't need to look for a defensive midfielder. Hope he can carry that form to the remaining matches. Alan Smith was also very energetic and was harassing the Roma defence throughout.
Overall , a majestic display by united. Certainly their best european performance. A treat for the supporters and neutrals as well. United for the treble!!
Viva United!
